As part of the new project “Mês do Azulejo”, the National Tile Museum launched a difficult challenge to young independent artists, to reflect upon the course (s) that azulejo will assume on this XXI century. Three artists - Estúdio Pedrita, Maria Ana Vasco Costa e Tex-tile – accepted this challenge in a brave and courageous way and the Works that we now present are theirs and will be the embryo of a larger project. In due course we will promote an exhibition that will be the privileged venue for reflection of the principles that orientated the production of azulejo, from the second half of the XX century until today, extending this challenge to others that might want to present their proposals, in what they think might be the paths of the future.

At the same time we wanted to understand the kind of ideas that might emerge of such a challenge, if made in the context of an area of teaching and artistic work. So, we proposed to Ar.Co the same theme to be organized in a work of reflection and production with several members of the artistic profiles taught in this Center of Art and Visual Comunication.

This challenge, also risky and complex , had an immediate and enthusiastic reception from Ar.Co, having gathered 18 artists whose works (ceramic, drawing, engraving, among others) will be exhibited, being the first time that an opening occurs simultaneously and articulated at the MNAz and Ar.Co.

This project represents one of the main concerns at the MNAz, focusing the need to promote the reflection about creativity in Azulejo and trying to guarantee that it will proceed and that not loose one of its originalities, the capacity of reinventing itself
